Actually, most of the Americans speak languages based on Latin. America is a double-content of Northern and Southern America, so the English-speaking part of people is a minority.
US residents claim to be Americans - oh yes, they are, geographically, but 'American' is actually no nationality. A brazilian farmer is as much an American.

So actually, speaking American would be speaking Spanish and having Hispanic blood in veins, since nobody cares about the native Indians anymore - there are to few to be concerned about.
