"Demarkaatiolinja" psykoosin ja neuroosin välillä kulkee (karkeasti ja skemaattisesti) anaalisen vaiheen sisällä:
varhaisempi anaalinen vaihe eli anaalis-sadistinen ekspulsiivinen (ulostus-)vaihe vs.
myöhempi anaalinen vaihe eli anaalis-retentiivinen (säilyttävä) vaihe.
